Basic Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope Using Evident (Olympus) FV3000

The Scientific Imaging Center (SIC), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), successfully organized its first workshop on Basic Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) Using Olympus FV3000 on 19 February 2025. The event introduced participants to fundamental confocal microscopy principles and practical data acquisition techniques using SIC’s newly available Olympus FV3000 demonstration system and the Olympus IX73 wide-field fluorescence microscope.

The workshop featured lectures delivered by Prof. Dr. Anggraini Barlian, M.Sc., Head of SIC and Lecturer at the School of Life Sciences and Technology (SITH) ITB, and Fitria Dwi Ayuningtyas, Ph.D., Facility Manager of SIC. The speakers provided participants with an introduction to the fundamental principles of confocal microscopy, imaging techniques, and current applications of CLSM in stem cell research and tissue engineering.

A total of 30 participants attended the workshop, demonstrating strong interest in advanced imaging technologies and confocal microscopy. Participants represented a broad range of institutions from academia, research organizations, and industry. Academic attendees included representatives from Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Hasanuddin, Universitas Maranatha, and Universitas Ahmad Dahlan.

The workshop also welcomed participants from research institutes and industry, including Bio Farma, PUI Nutraseutikal ITB, Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN), PT Vaksindo Satwa Nusantara, and Prodia StemCell. The diversity of participants highlighted SIC’s growing role as a shared scientific facility and a national reference center for advanced imaging technologies.

The program combined lecture sessions with intensive hands-on training, allowing participants to gain direct experience operating the Olympus FV3000 confocal microscope. Through guided practical sessions, participants learned essential workflows for sample observation, image acquisition, and fluorescence imaging techniques. This integrated learning approach enabled attendees to strengthen both their theoretical understanding and practical skills in confocal microscopy.

By providing access to state-of-the-art imaging instrumentation and expert-led training, the workshop contributed to improving user literacy and technical competency in confocal imaging. The successful implementation of this inaugural CLSM workshop further reinforces SIC’s commitment to supporting scientific research, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and advancing imaging technology development in Indonesia.
